"I work in health care, and I’ve never met a team more professional and caring in my life."
HealthEast Maternity Care Center at St. John’s Hospital patient Autumn Mans

“Every one of my girlfriends who had kids gave me the same advice when I was pregnant,” said Autumn Mans. “They all said, ‘You just never know what’s going to happen, so don’t have specific expectations.’” But after touring HealthEast Maternity Care Center at St. John’s Hospital, as well as taking a birthing class there, both Autumn and her husband expected a great experience. “We’d heard really good things about St. John’s, and we really liked the bigger delivery rooms—they’re really comfy and cozy, with a place for my husband to sleep too.”

In the final weeks of her pregnancy, Autumn was eager to meet her baby, particularly since she was experiencing some physical concerns. Autumn’s doctor decided that she should be induced and contacted St. John’s to find out when they could fit her in. “When he came back to the room, he told me, ‘You’re going in tonight!’”

From the first moment of her arrival, Autumn could tell she was well cared for. “The nurses are always on hand to try to keep you comfortable. I was up most of the night, and they had to monitor the baby because his heart rate was running a little low, but they were so respectful about coming in as little as possible so I could rest.”

As her labor progressed, the labor nurses provided constant updates, as well as encouragement and reassurance. Autumn recalls, “Even while I was in the middle of labor, I noticed how much they helped my husband too. And since I was in labor for several hours, I had different nurses—but every one who came in was so fully informed and caring—it was like it was the same nurse in a different body.”

After pushing for two and a half hours, the perfectly healthy little Hayden was born. And now Autumn has advice of her own for pregnant friends: “Make use of any support available to you, both while you’re in labor and right after the baby’s born. I felt so lucky to have the St. John’s nurses. I work in health care, and I honestly have never met a team more professional and caring in my life.”
