“When you go to see a doctor, they should know everything about you.”

Doctor referrals can come from friends, from neighbors, or even from conversations struck up with complete strangers. For Laura and Chris Bale, however, the discovery of their family doctor, Thanh Huynh, came in the most personal way possible: Watching him care for a loved one in crisis. “My father had a traumatic car accident,” said Laura. “Because of the accident, we found out about unrelated health issues. But for the last four years, he’s been healthy—and I attribute a lot of that to Dr. Huynh being so good about helping us. My dad was a 50-year-old who never went to a doctor, but he feels comfortable with
Dr. Huynh.”
Shortly after her father’s accident, Laura and her husband Chris discovered they were expecting a baby—their first, and the first in their circle of friends. “I always knew I wanted a childbirth as natural as possible, but had a lot of questions,” said Laura. “So I went to see the nurse-midwives at HealthEast, and met Lisa Mattke, certified nurse-midwife. I felt so connected with her, that I chose to only see her for all my prenatal care. I always felt like a priority, like she was part of our family for nine months.”
After their son’s delivery, the Bales realized they had to make a decision about their newborn’s care. “We hadn’t really explored pediatricians,” said Laura, “and then I remembered that Dr. Huynh is a family doctor, and he knew us so well as a family unit. So he started seeing our son at the hospital right after our birth, and has been our doctor ever since.”
Chris notes the gentle care that defines Dr. Huynh’s practice at HealthEast Grand Avenue Clinic. “He is so compassionate. He treats your kids like they’re his kids. When our son went for his shots when he as a baby, he would be a little afraid of the nurses and assistants, but as soon as Dr. Huynh would come in, he’d relax. I think it’s the way Dr. Huynh approaches kids with a very gentle presence, so sincere and charismatic.” Laura added: “A doctor who delivers the personalized care my father received—and that we’re receiving—that’s who you want caring for you and your family.”
